COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A Republican challenging South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has picked a Charleston businessman as his running mate.
Greenville businessman John Warren says Pat McKinney is “a foot soldier for leaders like Jim DeMint and Nikki Haley.”
Warren says McKinney can help him bring conservative reform to South Carolina.
McKinney ran for lieutenant governor in 2014 before dropping out ahead of an impending runoff with McMaster, the eventual winner. Both McKinney and McMaster served on Haley’s transition team, and Haley went on to appoint both men to the state Ports Authority board.
McKinney says Warren will be a reformer in the same mold as Haley.
South Carolina’s primary elections are June 12. Both McMaster and former state agency head Catherine Templeton have announced their running mates.
