GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Jurors have convicted an upstate South Carolina man of sexually assaulting children and exposing them to the HIV virus.
William Lee Carpenter Jr. of Travelers Rest was convicted Thursday on four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of unlawful conduct on a child and two counts of exposing a child to HIV.
Local news outlets report Judge Letitia H. Verdin sentenced the 57-year-old Carpenter to 30 years in prison. He must serve at least 25 years before becoming parole-eligible.
Prosecutors say Carpenter assaulted a boy and girl, both younger than 10, at his home between 2014 and 2016.
Regina Gail Owings is accused of holding children down during one assault. She hasn’t yet been tried.
