MARLBORO CO., S.C. (WMBF) — Spokesperson for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says the agency is investigating after two officers with the Clio police department shot a man who was driving toward them on a lawnmower and fired shots at them in the 500 block of South Main Street, or Hwy 9.
According to Thom Berry, with SLED, Clio police officers have been investigating a string of breaking and entering incidents, and early this morning, they had another case. The two officers, along with a Marlboro County deputy were investigating another overnight breaking and entering call when they encountered a man approaching them on a riding lawnmower.
The man fired at the officers, but none of them were struck, according to Berry. The Marlboro deputy’s car was struck with bullets, however. The two Clio officers fired back at the man, striking him. He was transported to a hospital in Dillon where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is the process of being released, at which point he’ll be taken into police custody. The suspect has not yet been identified.
Clio Police first contacted SLED around 3 a.m. overnight to ask for assistance from the agency’s crime scene team to help process the breaking and entering call. Around 5 a.m. they contacted them again to report the shooting. As is standard, the state agency will lead in the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
This incident took place near Clio Elementary, but Berry says it’s unclear where the breaking and entering actually took place.
