Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said a suspect was fatally shot after pointing a crossbow at deputies Friday morning.
The incident happened on Grace Chapel Road.
Wright said deputies were responding to report of criminal sexual conduct. Deputies arrived to find a woman who had been sexually assaulted and learned the suspect was still on scene.
Deputies encountered the suspect in a wooded area and Wright said the suspect pointed a crossbow at the deputies. The suspect refused to put the weapon down and Wright said deputies were forced to open fire.
“We had to do our jobs and unfortunately the bad guy didn’t make it,” Wright said of the encounter.
Four deputies were on scene at the time the suspect was shot. None of them were hurt.
The deputies were placed on paid administrative leave and SLED and the coroner were called in to investigate.
“It’s a really terrible part of our job but it is a part of it,” Wright said of the shooting.
Grace Chapel Road was closed in the area as SLED and the coroner investigated and collected evidence.
