(CNN) – A Massachusetts librarian wrote a sharply worded open letter recently rejecting first lady Melania Trump’s book donation.

The first lady sent books this month to schools deemed to have high standards of excellence.

Liz Phipps Soeiro, librarian at Cambridgeport Elementary, took exception to the donation.

Soeiro, who disagrees with the Trump administration’s education platforms, wrote on her blog that the school already has plenty of resources. She also mentioned being impressed with the fancy bookplates that included Trump’s name and the White House logo inside all of the Dr. Seuss books.

The donation was in honor of National Read a Book Day.

Soeiro said the school didn’t need the books and called Seuss a “bit of a cliché” and that his characters are “racist propaganda, caricatures and harmful stereotypes” and provided specific examples, including “The Cat in The Hat, which was one of the books donated by the White House.

Soeiro also provided a list of 10 books to “offer a window into the lives of the many children affected by the policies of your husband’s administration.”

The East Wing communications director said the response from Soreiro turned the first lady’s gesture into something divisive.

Cambridge Public Schools issued a statement saying the librarian’s opinion did not represent a “formal” rejection of the gift.
