Authorities searching for vehicle chase suspect on Hwy 278 near Sun City

A search is underway in the area of Highway 278 near Sun City after a man got away on foot after investigators pulled over his minivan, around 11:30 Monday morning.

Officials say the pursuit started when police attempted a traffic stop on the minivan on eastbound Highway 278. The driver did not stop the car, hitting another vehicle as the chase continued from Hardeeville into Beaufort County. The man drove off the roadway into a wooded area near Sun City, where he ran away into the woods. He’s been described as a tall, slender-built African American with dreads, wearing red shorts and no shirt.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputies and Hardeeville Police are on-scene and have established a perimeter. Law enforcement and K-9 are currently conducting a search for the subject. The sheriff’s office helicopter was called in to fly over the area. Officials believe the suspect may have headed west of Sun City in the direction of University Park. It is not known if he is armed.

Deputies say a male passenger remained behind in the minivan as the suspect got away. He is currently being interviewed by investigators. A check of the registration of the vehicle revealed that it was reported stolen out of Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island, Sunday. It’s being processed for forensic evidence.

The adult female driver of the vehicle struck by the minivan sustained only minor injuries. She was examined and treated by EMS at the scene.

Anyone with information on the subject’s whereabouts is urged to call Emergency Dispatch 911.
