4-year-old girl, woman wounded during Birmingham shootout

A 4-year-old child and woman were wounded in a shooting in Birmingham Sunday afternoon.

Both victims have been transported to the hospital. Police say the child’s injuries are life-threatening.

All five suspects are in custody as of Monday afternoon.

The shootout involved two men on 47th Street North. One of the shooters brought his 4-year-old daughter to the gun fight. That shooter started firing shots inside the other male’s car.

His gun jammed and at that point, the other shooter got out of his car and started shooting back.

During that shootout, the 4-year-old was shot in the back of the head and the bullet came out through the face.

Also, another woman who was driving on 47th Street was struck by a stray bullet. She was shot in the neck.

She drove herself to Fire Station No. 12 and was transported to the hospital. Lt. Sean Edwards said her injuries are life-threatening.

The shooter with the 4-year-old in the car drove to 46th Place North and that’s where he realized the girl had been shot. He did not take her to the hospital. Someone else drove the girl to the hospital.

Both victims are in critical condition as of Monday. Police describe the young girl’s condition as grim. She is still on a ventilator.

Edwards says the father of the 4-year-old and his passenger were taken into custody on Sunday. The two were at the hospital where the little girl was taken.

Authorities continue to investigate.
