The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after a Sumter County deputy was injured in a car chase Wednesday night.
Sumter deputies said just after 8 p.m. a car refused to stop for blue lights after fleeing from a license checkpoint on Mooneyham Road. A slow-speed chase ensued through the county that ended with the suspects’ car flipping over on Atlantic Avenue, just outside of Sumter.
A deputy who was involved in the chase ran into a tree and was injured. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital after treatment.
The driver, 29-year-old Tyburious Marquis Heyward of Sumter, was charged with driving under suspension, second offense and failure to stop for blue lights. Neither he nor his passenger suffered injuries.
Heyward is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash.
