MILWAUKEE (WITI/CNN) – A 4-year-old boy is recovering from a gunshot wound after police say he got a hold of his mother’s weapon.
Police say on Sunday a mother left her handgun within reach of her son, who shot himself and endured a non-life-threatening injury.
Police arrested the woman. The child at last check is being treated for his injury.
“It’s a blessing that this child is still alive,” said Marna Winbush, president of Mothers Against Gun Violence.
The group started in 2004 when Winbush and two other mothers lost their sons in a shooting.
She says her heart feels for the mother in this case, who could face charges.
“My heart goes out to the mother because I know she probably didn’t intentionally mean to leave the gun there,” Winbush said.
Neighbors who spoke with police said they were informed officers were investigating after someone shot themselves in the hand. They were shocked to learn a child pulled the trigger.
“I am horrified to realize it was a little boy,” Sharon Frantl said.
Winbush says this potentially fatal incident is a reminder to gun owners of the risks of leaving unattended firearms around children.
“Do something to find a way to put the guns up where they would be able to get to them and not the children,” she said.
She is now looking at new safety campaigns encouraging gun owners to keep fire arms at a higher reach, under lock and key.
She believes this is another example of widespread gun violence in Milwaukee.
“It’s really sad that these things are happening, and if we keep going this way, our young children don`t stand a chance,” Winbush said.
The case is under review by the district attorney.
