Local high school students advance to state mock trial championship

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Local high school students are preparing to compete at this weekend’s South Carolina Bar High School Mock Trial State championship in Columbia.

The students of Carolina Forest High School’s mock trial team have been preparing all week for the upcoming competition, hosting practices every day after school.

“They give us affidavits for each witness and they also give us whatever the person was charged with,” said team coach Anthony Antoliak. “This year it’s a civil case about wrongful termination, and they give us the affidavits of each witness saying what they saw and their story behind it, and so we have to adapt that to our side of the case and how we’re going to use the law.”

According to the South Carolina Bar website, Socastee High School’s mock trial team is also advancing as the winner of the Conway region. North Myrtle Beach High School was listed as the statewide backup team, and was set to be notified by March 3 at 5 p.m.

The website states that, “the goal of Mock Trial is to educate students about the basis of our American judicial system and the mechanics of litigation.”

The South Carolina Bar High School Mock Trial champion will represent South Carolina at the National High School Mock Trial Championship Inc. in May.
