Charleston Police make arrest in fatal September shooting

Charleston Police charged a 26-year-old man who is currently in prison on unrelated charges with a downtown homicide.

Eugene Rollerson, of Goose Creek, is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said.

The new charges stem from a Sept. 14, 2016, shooting death in the area of Columbus and Hanover Streets, Francis said. Police responded to the area at approximately 10:45 p.m. that night on a report of shots fired and found several bystanders rendering aid to a man who had been shot, he said.

The man was transported to MUSC where he later died.

Francis said forensic evidence and surveillance video led to the charges against Rollerson.

Rollerson is currently being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing Thursday afternoon, Francis said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 843-743-7200 and ask for the on-duty Charleston Police detective or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
