Prom police: St. James High student enlists Horry County officer for ‘promposal’

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – In this day and age, simply asking someone to prom is about as old-fashioned as a landline phone or a cassette player.

For one local teen, his “promposal” encompassed the letter of the law – literally.

Body cam video from a Horry County Police Department officer was shared to WMBF News’ Facebook page by viewer Michelle Hargrove. What appeared to be a routine traffic stop was actually an elaborate way for a St. James High School junior to ask his girlfriend of eight months to the big dance.

In the video, the officer is seen approaching the driver’s side window of fellow St. James High junior Remi Hargrove’s vehicle following the traffic stop. He asks for her license and registration.

Hargrove said Friday she and her future prom date, Dakota Brown, had just turned onto Holmestown Road when the stop happened.

“I was like, so scared,” Hargrove said. “It was crazy.”

Once the officer has her license, he asked Hargrove if he knew why she was pulled over. The clueless driver said she didn’t, to which the cop replied there was a report that she and Brown had been fighting at school.

The officer then asks Brown to step out of the vehicle, at which point both are seen moving to the rear.

“So you want me to tell her where she’s got to go or do you want to tell her?” the officer is heard asking Brown when they’re both at the back of the vehicle.

Hargrove is then asked to exit the vehicle and come to the back. There, Brown hands her a ticket.

She said it was a standard traffic ticket, complete with her name and address. At the bottom, however, the words “For prom” were written.

Hargrove said “yes” and the two hugged.

“I thought it was pretty cool that he put that all together,” she said.

Brown said he hatched his plan with Michelle Hargrove, whose police officer friend helped organize the clever scheme.

“She’s deathly scared of getting pulled over, so we had to make it funny and worthwhile,” Brown said of his plan of asking Hargrove to prom.

At the end of the video, the officer tells Hargrove that she had nothing to be scared of, before signing off with “You’re all set.”
