HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Forest Trail Academy’s basketball team from Kernersville, NC traveled to Myrtle Beach for the USA National Prep tournament. The team stayed at a La Quinta hotel Wednesday and Thursday nights, where they claim their rooms were infested with cockroaches and bed bugs.
The hotel declined to comment.
Head Coach Tony Taylor said the bugs woke him up at 1:30 Friday morning.
“I just feel stuff crawling on me. And at first I’m just shooing it off, and then I kept feeling it so when I did it again, it was a cockroach on me,” said Tony Taylor.
He claims he confronted the front desk to report the incident and the hotel employee he spoke with said she would notify the manager the next morning.
“I went back in the morning to talk to the front desk, to the owner, and to check the guys out. And he basically told us we were lying about the situation, that there were no bugs and he had pest control come out and pest control said that there were no bugs,” Taylor said.
Taylor said he was very upset that his players had to go through something like this, so he immediately tried to get a refund on the rooms in order to find them a new place to stay for the remainder of the tournament.
However, according to Taylor, the manager did not grant a refund.
“He charged us for not only the night that I was trying to check out but the nights before that,” he said.
Taylor and his team eventually paid the hotel and left.
He told me he will be pursuing legal action against the hotel and has already been discussing options with his lawyer.
